Transfer a Domain Away from YWT

How to move your domain from YourWebTech (ywt.ch) to another registrar.

Transfer a Domain Away from YWT

If you want to move your domain to a different registrar, YWT makes it straightforward. This guide walks you through requesting an authorization code and completing the transfer-out process.

Before you begin

Make sure the following conditions are met before you start:

  • The domain must be eligible for transfer. Check the domain status in YWT and resolve any transfer-blocking status before starting.
  • The domain must not have a transfer-blocking registry status. If the domain shows serverTransferProhibited, YWT cannot issue a usable transfer-out code until the block is resolved.
  • The domain must not be expired. Expired domains typically cannot be transferred. If your domain is already in a recovery state, renew or recover it first. See Renewals.
  • DNSSEC may need to be removed first. YWT blocks transfer-out when registry DNSSEC data is still present because the new registrar may not be able to complete the transfer safely.

YWT does not charge a fee for transferring a domain away. However, your new registrar may charge a transfer-in fee on their side.

Request the authorization code

Go to your domain settings

Log in to your YWT account, navigate to Domains, and select the domain you want to transfer away. Open the Settings tab.

Check transfer blockers

Review the domain status and DNSSEC state. If YWT reports that transfer-out is not allowed, resolve the reason before trying again.

Request the auth code

Click Transfer out and confirm the dialog. YWT generates a new authorization code and sends it by email to the account user.

Copy the code from that email and keep it safe. Auth codes may be valid only for a limited time.

Provide the auth code to your new registrar

Go to your new registrar's website and start a domain transfer. When prompted, enter the domain name and paste the authorization code from YWT.

Your new registrar will submit the transfer request to the registry.

Approve the transfer

You may receive a confirmation email from the new registrar or registry. Act on any transfer-related email promptly.

What happens after the transfer

Once the transfer to your new registrar is complete:

  • YWT detects the transfer automatically. We reconcile the sponsoring registrar with the registry at least once a day. When the transfer is detected, the domain is marked Transferred away in your account and you receive a one-time confirmation email.
  • The domain stays listed (flagged) until you remove it. It remains visible under Domains as a record; you can remove it from the list at any time.
  • All renewal activity for the domain stops. A transferred-away domain is excluded from renewal reminders, automatic charges, and the expiry pipeline.
  • DNS records hosted at YWT stop working if the new registrar changes the nameservers. Make sure you have recreated all necessary DNS records (A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, etc.) at your new provider before or immediately after the transfer.
  • Static hosting on YWT is not affected immediately, but if the domain's DNS no longer points to YWT, your hosted site will stop being accessible on that custom domain. The hosting project itself remains in your YWT account and can still be accessed via its subdomain.ywt.app hostname.
  • DNSSEC configuration at YWT will no longer apply. Set up DNSSEC at your new registrar if needed.

Plan your DNS migration carefully. If you have email (MX records), SSL verification (TXT/CNAME records), or other critical DNS entries, recreate them at the new registrar before the nameserver change takes effect. Otherwise, you risk downtime for email and other services.

Pending renewal invoices and refunds

Transfers sometimes happen while a renewal is already in flight. Here is exactly how that is handled:

  • Unpaid renewal invoice: when the transfer-away is detected, an open renewal invoice for the domain is cancelled automatically — you will never be charged a renewal for a domain YWT no longer manages. If the invoice also covers other domains that are still with YWT, it is kept for those domains and our team reviews the transferred domain's line item manually.
  • Paid renewal that the registry had not yet processed: the renewal is not applied to a transferred-away domain. These cases are flagged for manual review and refunded — contact support to speed this up.
  • Removing the domain from your account is blocked while a renewal invoice is still attached to it, so a payable invoice can never be orphaned. The block clears automatically once the invoice is cancelled or resolved (at the latest after the daily reconciliation).

Frequently asked questions

Can I cancel a transfer-out after requesting the auth code? Requesting an auth code does not start a transfer. The transfer only begins when your new registrar submits the request to the registry. If you want to stop a transfer that is already in progress, you can reject it via the confirmation email (if one is sent) or contact YWT support.

How long does a transfer-out take? For .ch and .li domains, transfers through SWITCH are usually fast, often minutes to a few hours after the new registrar submits a valid request.

Will I lose any remaining registration time? No. Transfers preserve your existing registration period. Your new registrar may also add a year depending on the TLD's transfer policy.

I did not receive the auth code email. Check your spam folder and make sure your YWT account email is monitored. You can also try requesting the code again from the domain settings page.
