Failed payments

Troubleshoot failed payments at YWT — common causes, how to fix them, and what happens to your domains if a payment is not resolved.

Failed payments

A failed payment means YWT was unable to charge your payment method for a domain registration, renewal, or transfer. This page explains why payments fail, how to fix the problem, and what happens if the issue is not resolved in time.

Common reasons for failed payments

Most payment failures come down to one of these causes:

  • Expired card — Your credit or debit card has passed its expiration date.
  • Insufficient funds — The account linked to your payment method does not have enough balance to cover the charge.
  • Bank decline — Your bank or card issuer blocked the transaction. This can happen due to fraud prevention rules, international transaction restrictions, or spending limits.
  • Incorrect card details — The card number, expiration date, or CVV on file is incorrect.
  • 3D Secure / verification failure — The payment required additional authentication (such as a one-time code from your bank) that was not completed.

How to resolve a failed payment

Check the failure reason

Go to Account > Orders in your YWT account. Find the unpaid order and click it. If Stripe provides payment context, YWT shows the current invoice state.

Update your payment method

If the issue is an expired or incorrect card, go to your Account page and update your payment methods. Add a new card or correct the existing one.

Retry the payment

Return to the unpaid order and click Pay. YWT sends you back to checkout so you can complete payment with the available Stripe payment methods.

Confirm the order status

After paying, check that the invoice status changes to Paid. You will also receive a confirmation email once payment succeeds and order processing continues.

If your bank is declining the transaction, try contacting them directly. Some banks block online payments to foreign merchants by default and need you to approve the transaction manually.

What happens if the payment is not resolved

YWT does not immediately delete a domain because a payment attempt fails, but the timeline is tied to the domain expiration date:

  1. Immediate — You receive an email notification about the failed payment.
  2. Renewal windows — YWT continues scheduled renewal handling around the 30-day, 14-day, 7-day, and 1-day phases before expiry.
  3. Expiration — If payment is not resolved before expiration, the domain may expire and your website or email can go offline.
  4. Registry release — If the domain cannot be recovered, the registry may eventually release it for new registration.

Do not wait until the last day before expiration to fix a payment issue. Bank processing times and verification steps can add unexpected delays. Resolve failed payments as soon as you receive the notification.

Preventing future payment failures

  • Keep your payment method up to date — When you receive a new card, update it in your YWT account immediately. Go to your Account page to manage payment methods.
  • Enable auto-renew early — This gives YWT more time to process renewals and notify you if something goes wrong. See Auto-renew.
  • Monitor notification emails — YWT sends reminders before expiration and alerts when payments fail. Check the email address you use for your account regularly. See Profile settings.
  • Ensure sufficient funds — If you use a debit card or prepaid card, make sure there is enough balance before renewal dates.

Still having trouble?

If you have updated your payment method and retried but the payment still fails, contact YWT support. Include your order number and any error messages you see so the team can investigate the issue quickly.
